For half a second, I considered calling this one "I don't get it". My wife is entirely supportive of my photography, but she is the first to admit that a lot of my subjects and how I choose to frame them completely escape her. She can appreciate that technically a lot of these are quite acceptable, but as I pointed my camera out the window of our B&B in Glasgow's west end saying I was taking pictures of rooftops and chimneys, her face glazed over with that "I don't get it" look. And I am not sure even I could describe why I like this picture. But I do.

I love this one, great detail and shadows.
And your wife sounds exactly the same as mine ;-) And like you I have trouble explaining my reasons for particular shots too... onewayphotoblog / Mark @ June 9, 2008
Well, I think you are describing quite a common problem for us photoghraphers, but sometimes these - in many ways deeply personal - images are our best. I really do like this image, certainly the light falling on the chimney is beautiful. I also like your composition and how the big chimney is repeated by the 'smaller' ones on the other side of the roof. Thomas Folke Andersen @ June 9, 2008
The chimney's shadow really enhances the composition. It reminds me of the rooftop scenes in Mary Poppins. Love it! JulieM @ June 9, 2008
This is great. I love the processing, and the way the shadow falls on the rooftop. d e s o l a t e | m e t r o p @ June 9, 2008
awesome processing. love the shadow on the roof and the slight vignette in the sky. very cool. dillonpic @ June 9, 2008
Another great shot. Color, lighting, composition, the works. I really dig your style. Hope I didn't offend you with my foot picture. Perhaps a bit too shocking for photoblogs. Jesse Moscoe @ June 9, 2008
Yes, me too, I really like this one. Like Thomas, I think that repetition in a image adds something to it, and in this image that part is very nicely handled. In addition, I really like the different lines going into the image; the vertical chimney, the diagonal rooftop, and the shadow of the chimney all add up to a great composition. And of course the postproduction... This is an excellent image! Very well done, Jim! :-) -trond- @ June 9, 2008
I love the geometric shapes in this image. Altho it's already been said - I agree. The chimney's shadow really makes it. Marcie @ June 9, 2008
Very subtile composition - love the colors and shadows and repetition (yep, that's all!) - so beauty is everywhere ..!?

yes! beauty is everywhere! Love this shot! great contrast, colors and composition. Like the shadow! Alejandra @ June 10, 2008
Great shot and really good processing! Filip @ June 10, 2008
For me, I think the chimney tops of the background chimney echo what you see in the foreground and works to form a connection. There's also a geometrical element to this shot that's appealing as well. Keep up those "I don't get it" shots. I get the same looks from my wife as well. Sean @ June 21, 2008
