I've never claimed that portraits are my strong point. They very much are not. My wife, in particular, has always found my shots of her wanting. Until Sunday, while we were out at the zoo, wandering around the farm area while Ella was playing, and I pointed the camera at her and got a picture that she was finally happy with, one that captures herself the ways she sees herself in her mind's eye. It may not be an award-winning portrait, but I don't think you can do any more than capture that intangible quality that captures the subject.

She has good reason to be happy with this fine portrait. Laurie @ August 25, 2009
Same thing with my wife. "Elles sont comme ça" :) PixeLuz @ August 26, 2009
Great portrait! Her eyes have lots of things to say ;).
Have you tried cropping it vertically? I think it would draw much more attention to her eyes rather than her hair or the background. The Obvious @ August 26, 2009
Great portrait! Love the grain in it, it makes it real and her eyes are a perfect focus point! Framed and Shot @ August 27, 2009
An extremely powerful portrait...well done! Ian Bramham @ August 27, 2009
"And her eyes that shine like a midnight sun" (bruce Springsteen)
What I love about this portrait is not only the gesture but the frame that gives me the feel she can see right through me. The longer I look at it the more there is to discover. It may not be an award-winning portrait, but it sure is timeless & great, Jim. A brilliant closeup portrait. All the best & safe travels, Fritsch. Fritsch @ August 27, 2009
I think its a beautiful portrait. She really has beautiful eyes. Fia @ August 27, 2009
A very nice portrait! Great composition, her hair frames her face perfectly. -trond- @ August 30, 2009
A lovely portrait and to capture someone close is far more difficult than to do a portrait of a stranger. Wonderful direct and amused expression. daina @ August 31, 2009
Oh, I like this one. It is unusually cropped which workes perfectly in this case. Mikhail Yukhnovskiy @ September 2, 2009
